USS Normandy conducts Anti-Submarine Warfare training with international partners

GULF OF OMAN – Guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG60) conducted Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) training with members of the Pakistani and Omani Navies during the third full day of International Maritime Exercise (IMX) 2019.

IMX is a bi-annual maritime exercise designed to bring cooperative training across multiple warfare areas. Along with ASW, the participating countries will conduct partnership exercises in air defense, surface warfare and operating as a joint task force.

USS Normandy and the Pakistani forces participated in an ASW tracking exercise testing both ships ability to track an underwater target. The USS Normandy ASW team spent time working with a contingent of Omani Sailors, improving partnership and proficiency.

This is USS Normandy’s second ASW exercise of the 2019 deployment, which commenced in September. Normandy led a multi-ship ASW scenario as part of exercises with U.S. Second Fleet in the Arctic Ocean before entering the Fifth Fleet area of responsibility.

Senior Chief Sonar Technician Joe Bogle, USS Normandy’s senior enlisted ASW specialist, said, “We have now demonstrated that we can conduct ASW in nearly any environment. We did it in the high north and now we’ve done it in the Gulf of Oman. This team works hard to hone their skills. I always look forward to events like this to train and ensure Normandy’s ASW team is ready for all circumstances.”

USS Normandy was tasked as the Anti-Submarine Warfare Commander for IMX 2019.

Commanding Officer Capt. Chris. Stone said, “This is a role we embrace. Despite our primary responsibility of air defense, we are a multi-warfare platform. I had the utmost confidence in our ASW team to provide quality training and they delivered.”

Throughout IMX, USS Normandy and her crew will train and operate with multiple countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Oman and Pakistan.

“Maritime security is not just on top of the water; it is beneath it as well,” Stone added. “We are committed to our regional partners in ensuring that the nearly 30 percent of the worldwide energy that traverses these waters daily is secure and free for commerce.”

USS Normandy, homeported in Norfolk, Virginia, is deployed to the U.S. Fifth Fleet area of responsibility as part of a scheduled deployment.
