A groundbreaking ceremony for the U.S. 98/Tyndall Air Force Base Flyover was held at Tyndall’s Flag Park, Florida, Nov. 6, 2019.
The flyover will improve mobility by separating through traffic on U.S. 98 from drivers entering and exiting Tyndall.
“Having this overpass will reduce traffic congestion for the busy intersection, improve safety, and allow for additional access capacity to the base,” said Fla. Gov. Ron DeSantis.
The plan is to elevate the U.S. 98 travel lanes with on and off ramps to accommodate traffic between the highway and base gates. On base traffic flow between the Airey and Tyndall gate will no longer need to exit and re-enter base.
The project represents a continued partnership with the State of Florida in supporting the rebuild process of Tyndall. This is a collaborative effort of the Florida Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, and Tyndall’s 325th Fighter Wing.
“This project is the first but it’s definitely one of the many that will truly make Tyndall Air Force Base an Air Force base of the future,” said Col. Brian Laidlaw, 325th Fighter Wing commander.
Construction for the flyover will start soon and is currently estimated to be finished late 2021.
Laidlaw added, “The project supports not only Tyndall Air Force Base’s missions. It supports our community and it also supports our local economy. It truly is a project where everybody wins.”
