Why are military plane crash deaths up 130% compared to last year?

Historically, even during peacetime, aviation has been one of the most hazardous military career fields.

However, this year is proving to be even more dangerous than usual for those who crew America’s military aircraft.

Fox News reports that the current total of 37 military personnel have died in plane crashes since the beginning of 2017. This figure is 130% higher than the death total at this point last year.

Even before the Navy cargo plane crash Wednesday, the number of U.S. troops killed in plane crashes had skyrocketed this year along with the total number of crashes overall compared to this point a year ago, a Fox News investigation has uncovered. This is proving to be a time of crisis for the military aviation community in general. Besides safety problems, retention of mission critical personnel is also a problem. As previously reported, the Air Force is currently suffering from an extreme pilot shortage.
